General Practioner Geriatrician (GPG) - Saint John

Location:

Region 2 - Saint John and the Fundy Shore
Community: Saint John
Facility: St. Joseph’s Hospital (Saint John)

Position Description:

This full-time Family Physician position is integrated into a well-established inpatient Geriatric Medicine service. The successful candidate will assume primary clinical responsibility for one of our flagship geriatric inpatient units—the 21-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit—as well as a smaller cohort of patients on the adjacent Cognitive Assessment and Management (CAM) Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John.

Patients admitted to the GEM Unit typically present with complex, multifactorial conditions, including undifferentiated cognitive impairment, polypharmacy, mobility challenges, and social care needs. The CAM Unit focuses on individuals with moderate to advanced dementia, often accompanied by behavioral and psychological symptoms requiring specialized management.

Both units operate within a highly collaborative, interprofessional model, bringing together approximately ten disciplines working to their full scope of practice. Geriatricians are actively involved in providing consultation and support for complex cases, with enhanced involvement during the first six months to ensure a smooth and successful transition into the role. The position also includes dedicated weekly time for Pharmacy Rounds and Interprofessional Team Rounds, supporting comprehensive, patient-centered care planning.

We are also affiliated with Dalhousie Medicine, and our active teaching program sees many medical students and residents. The GEM Family Physician will also contribute to academic and teaching components of our service with opportunities for collaborative research and participation in Quality Improvement initiatives. This opportunity offers a wonderful lifestyle in a well-supported, team-based, in-patient care setting.
