THE POSITION: Academic Cardiac Surgeon

Position description:
Horizon Health Network, Saint John area (Region 2), is actively seeking permanent a full-time Academic Cardiac Surgeon in the New Brunswick Heart Centre (NBHC), and the Department of Surgery in affiliation with Dalhousie University.
The New Brunswick Heart Centre is located at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The NBHC is the sole tertiary cardiac care program in the province of New Brunswick. It has an annual cardiac surgery volume of nearly 900 cases spanning the full spectrum of cardiac surgery. The successful candidate will join 5 other cardiac surgeons, supported by 5 dedicated Nurse Associates. The NBHC has a particularly well established minimally invasive mitral program and complex aortic surgery program including endovascular approaches. There is an active multidisciplinary Transcatheter Aortic Valve (TAVI) program, Mitra Clip program, Lead Extraction program and a growing clinical trials and cardiovascular epidemiology research program. A subspecialty interest is strongly encouraged, especially among the fields of TAVI, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Heart Failure Surgery, Aortic Surgery and/or Arrhythmia Surgery.
Finally, Opportunities exist for academic cross appointment at both Dalhousie University and Memorial University. The Division of Cardiac Surgery is an integral part of the Department of Surgery. Division members have excellent opportunities for educational and research endeavors in addition to their clinical responsibilities.
Horizon has an annual budget of approximately $1.1 billion and has more than 12,600 employees, 1,100 physicians and 5,200 volunteers, auxiliary and alumnae members, as well as 17 foundations and 18 auxiliary and alumnae organizations. Horizon ensures representation from urban and rural areas through a 15-member Board that consists of 7 appointed and 8 elected members of the public.

  • Hours of work are normally provided between 0830hrs – 1630hrs Monday to Friday, unless otherwise agreed upon by the Service/Department Head.
  • After-hours and weekend call coverage in coordination with members of the Division of Cardiac Surgery.
These responsibilities are basic.  Additional duties may be assigned from time to time as may be necessary to the operation of Horizon Health Network:
  • Daily inpatient rounds.
  • Operating sessions as assigned by the OR Utilization Committee
  • Inpatient consultations
  • Hospital-based clinics
  • Involvement in teaching residents and medical students.
  • Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.

A nationally competitive Academic Funding Plan compensates New Brunswick Heart Centre physicians for clinical excellence, medical education, research and administration. The successful applicant will be compensated for their clinical work and general contribution to the department and are eligible to receive additional funding for specific academic and administrative projects.
  • Moving Expense Allowance with a Return of Service Agreement.
  • Summer of 2019.

  • A medical degree is required.
  • Certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada in Cardiac Surgery.  Consideration will be given to other University Medical School qualifications and training.
  • Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.
  • Proficiency in English is required.  Bilingual skills would be considered an asset.
  • In accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Physically able to perform assign duties.
