Position Title:     Certified Specialist – Internal Medicine - Infectious Disease Specialist

Position Summary:

The physician shall establish a comprehensive full-time community-based practice in Internal Medicine specializing in Infectious Disease care, providing both inpatient and outpatient services under the auspices of the Medical Specialties Program and participate in the on-call rota of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital.

 

Achieve accountability benchmarks for area of specialty (attached).

 

Reporting Relationship:

The physician reports to Head of the Department of Internal Medicine or designate and the Clinical Chief of Medical Specialties for all clinical, quality of care and patient care related issues and to the Administrative Director of the Medical Specialties Program for program delivery matters. The physician reports to the Vice President-Medical Affairs or designate for contractual and administrative management issues.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

In an equitable manner, the Physician will:

·         Provide an outpatient service for the assessment and management of both new and follow-up patients.

·         Provide scheduled coverage in the CMC program on a rotational basis, minimum of 4 weeks per year.

·         Provide inpatient care including daily rounds on patients, if indicated

·         Provide consultations to hospital-based patients as requested by attending staff.

·         Provide telephone consultation to colleagues.

·         Participate in the on-call rota of the Department of Internal Medicine.

·         Support antimicrobial stewardship within the hospital and community setting.

·     Teaching responsibilities for residents and medical students. 

·         Teaching responsibilities for nursing and peers as appropriate.

·         Participate in departmental and other appropriate Medical Specialties Program committees.

·     Participate in departmental shared academic responsibilities.

·         Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to address staff and patient education needs.

·         Practice in a collaborative fashion as a member of an interdisciplinary team and consult with members of other health professions as appropriate.

·         Participate in the use of departmental and corporate evidence-based rules of practice to ensure that expected standards of care are achieved.

·         Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.

·         Within the confines of this scope of practice and position description, provide other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be assigned by the Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Chief of Medical Specialties, the Chief of Staff and/or Vice President of Medical, Academic & Research Affairs.

 

 

Other Requirements:

·        Attend appropriate CME/CPD events as required by specialty.

·        Comply with the policies and procedures of the Department of Internal Medicine.

·        Comply with the provisions of the Hospital Act, the Regional Health Authorities Act, the Medical Services Payment Act, the Medical Pay Plan, and their regulations.

·        Comply with the Health Authority bylaws, rules and regulations, and policies and procedures.

·        Follow the Code of Ethics of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and the Canadian Medical Association.

 

 

Qualifications:

·        Specialist in Internal Medicine with additional expertise in Infectious Disease.

·        Must hold a valid license to practice medicine in the Province of New Brunswick.

·        Must be a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.

·        Must have current malpractice insurance from the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) appropriate to the category of practice.

·        Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.

·        Good attendance and work record.

·        Physically able to perform assigned duties.
